Andy started his training in Martial Arts in 1986 in Shotokan Karate. He began training in Haydock with Billy, Michael and Gary Cunliffe (father and sons)
who had all obtained their 1st Dans from Sensei Billy Higgins, 8th Dan.
From there Andy moved to train in Wigan under Mike Henderson, 3rd Dan and joined Ken Yu Kai Karate. Subsequent grading examinations were taken under Terry Pottage, 8th Dan
From there Andy took a break from Martial Arts in 1993, when he started a career in the Police Service and also to spend his time with his children who were born in 1996, 1997 and 2000. Although he took a lengthy break, he continued training through the Police and became an Unarmed Defensive Tactics / Personal Safety Instructor (encompassing PR24 Side Handled Baton / Straight Baton, Handcuffs and CS Incapacitants) and also became a National Public Order Tactical Trainer and a Method of Entry Instructor.
He again took up his training in Shotokan Karate in late 2004 when he joined Red Sun Karate, Pemberton as a 1st Kyu and subsequently graded under Shihan Phil Handyside, 8th Dan of The Shobukan Karate Organisation. He obtained his 1st Dan in December 2006. He remained with Red Sun Karate and was one of the senior club instructors.
In 2015 Andy left Red Sun Karate due to differences within the club and joined Lancashire Shotokan Karate Academy based in Orrell, Wigan under the instruction of Sensei Richard Pavsic, 6th Dan, where he remains and is a guest instructor at the club.
Andy has also trained in Taiho Jutsu, Budokan Karate and Escrima and continues his own study / self development looking at Kata Bunkai / Oyo.
